What
What is the Lung Health Check
The Beaumont RCSI Irish Cancer Society Lung Health Check is a clinical trial that aims to find people at higher risk of lung problems and offers them tests to check their lung health.
This clinical trial is run by Beaumont Hospital, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and funded by the Irish Cancer Society. Lung Health Check is run in selected Centric Health GP practices in North Dublin and the North East Region of Ireland. We are partnering with Alliance Medical Diagnostics Imaging (AMDI) who are helping us to run this clinical trial. This trial is funded by the Irish Cancer Society and EU4Health SOLACE programme.
What is the aim of Lung Health Check?
The aim of this clinical trial is to find people who are at higher risk of lung problems and to invite them to take part is Lung Health Check.
If you meet some criteria, this check includes some breathing tests and a low dose CT scan of the chest in a mobile unit in the community. This Lung Health Check finds out how well your lungs are working and aims to find any serious lung conditions, including lung cancer.
For most people, nothing is found, but if there are any problems, finding out early can make treatment simpler and more effective.
The Lung Health Check is being run to see if using mobile units in the community is a good way of offering Lung Health Checks in Ireland. Lung Health Checks look at how well your lungs are working and can help diagnose several conditions including lung cancer as early as possible. We are working with specific Centric Health GP practices and asking patients between the ages of 55-74 practices to take part.
To carry out this study we are only contacting individuals between the ages of 55-74 in participating Centric Health GP practices (Link to practice list) to see if a Lung Health Check is right for them. All patients will be sent a letter of invitation with a time and date for a call with one of our team.
What is a clinical trial?
A clinical trial is a type of research, involving people, that aims to find out how to improve medical treatments and health outcomes.
These studies test new ways to prevent, detect, or treat diseases and medical conditions. Clinical trials can sometimes be called trials, studies or pilots. We will use the word “study”. By participating in a study, people help doctors and scientists learn more about health and develop better ways of managing health conditions, for the future. The studies are carefully designed to ensure the individual’s safety and to provide reliable information.
